Sometimes change can be as easy as turning on the lights. In refugee camps in Africa and the Middle East community lighting is transforming the lives of displaced people. According to UNHCR, in 2021, 21 million people around the world were refugees, fleeing their homes because of conflict, disease, poverty, food insecurity or climate change. Accessing electricity is one of the biggest challenges as camps are often created to be temporary and are rarely connected to the grid. Lack of power affects women’s safety, forces people to cook using polluting stoves, denies children access to education, and robs refugees of the ability to move on with rebuilding their lives.
