While its inventor is debated, the word search emerged as a puzzle in the late 1960s, both in the United States, where Norman E. Gibat in Norman, Oklahoma, put them into his classified ads paper (the first theme being cities in Oklahoma) and also in Spain as a 'Sopas de letras' (soup of letters) by Pedro Ocón de Oro. As neither puzzle was patented, many imitators followed. The largest word search was created in 2015 by Ashish Dutt Sharma in India, containing 10,500 words.
