Bringing blooms indoors: it’s what every home needs

Hydrangeas Like a school science experiment, hydrangeas are the litmus papers of blooms – turning blue in an acidic soil, pink indicating that with more lime in it. Many have bought one, attracted by a cerulean shade, only to see it, when planted, drift though pale mauve and lilac before settling on pink. But if blue is what you’d like, grow one in a big pot of ericaceous compost. Their summer flowers, easily cut for a vase, last ages and keep some colour when dried, too.
