Fizzy pop

YES, YES, WE all know it’s full of sugar and not very good for you. But pop (as we call it in the north of England) was a rare treat when I was a kid and comes with fond memories. My grandma’s pantry always had two or three glass bottles keeping cool on the stone floor – yellow lemonade, dandelion and burdock, cream soda and ginger ale. She had a fridge but wasn’t fond of it, often unplugging it at night for safety, and anyway the pantry kept most things cool. A little older and pop meant the chance of free money – we’d scour bins and parks for empties – before recycling, glass pop bottles could be exchanged for hard cash at your local shop.
