Sandra lifted the needlework sampler off the wall and laid it down on her desk. A loose thread had caught her eye. It was odd she’d never noticed it before, but now she’d seen it, her fingers itched to tidy it away.
The sampler had hung in Sandra’s bedroom when she was a child and moved with her to every home she’d lived in subsequently. She’d learnt her ABC from the cross-stitch alphabets worked across the top half of the cloth in different styles. The red squirrel perched on the branch of an oak tree had watched over her as she fell asleep. While the embroidered elephant, its trunk uplifted as if trumpeting something joyful, had greeted her when she woke.
