WALKS ON THE WILDFLOWER SIDE Community plant spotting helps knowledge to blossom Plant hunting provides a valuable insight into how flora is responding to changing weather, and each year the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland (BSBI) invites people to join them in a New Year Plant Hunt, recording the wildflowers they see in bloom. Last year over 3,000 people found 629 flowering species, a 30% increase on the previous year. Of course, you can plant spot at any time of year. Dental surgeon and amateur botanical enthusiast Richard Bate spotted a ghost orchid last year. It’s the first time it’s been spotted since 2009 and only the second sighting since the 1980s.
