All around us, folktales can be found. Bobbing below the surface of a serene loch or lurking at the top of a windswept mountain, stories of spirits and spectres endure. Passed down through generations, they connect us to the people of the past, helping us to understand their awe, their fear, their curiosity. Discovering these well-spun yarns brings our surroundings and history to life, and there are plenty out there, if you know what to look for. Water, woodland, mountains and rocky terrain have all been good inspirations for folk tales.* Keep an eye out for anything that’s a peculiar shape or strangely large or small – if it’s caught your eye, it may well have drawn people’s attention in the past.
