Lia Leendertz is taking a leaf out of her own book. As the new year begins, the best-selling author of The Almanac will be leaning into January, drawing inspiration from the sky, the Earth and the stories passed down through millennia as she embraces the unique seasonal character of this sometimes bleak month. “January can be beautiful, with its glorious sunrises and snowdrop spears pushing through the soil,” she says. “But it’s also still the depths of winter. In December we’re all jolly, we’re celebrating, we’re feeding one another. Then suddenly the curtain drops and it’s dark, cold, austere. It’s such a big change.”
