But Dick was more than a good tale. Richard Whittington from Gloucester was sent to London as a boy to work in the cloth trade, eventually working for such big names as Richard II and John of Gaunt, and yes, becoming mayor of London not thrice but four times! The cat he teamed up with on his way to the big smoke was fictitious, however, likely borrowed from a Persian story to add a bit of fun (and fur) for panto audiences.
