While many venture west in search of beaches, it’s easy to overlook the subtle drama of Devon’s heartland. You perhaps may think Dartmoor’s charms to be a bit bleak, too rugged and out in the elements for a family with young children but, as it turns out, the opportunity to unwind in a converted barn on the western fringes of Dartmoor proved to be a welcome break at the tail end of winter for our family of four; a chance to explore more than brooding moorlands, but also deep river valleys, ancient oak woodlands and adventurous waterfall walks. Although we expected to be staying ‘in the bleak midwinter’, the weather actually delivered crisp bright days with endless blue skies framing the lofty tors.
