The fuel for all that is to follow, breakfast has long been regarded as the most important meal of the day. Only the ingredients have changed. Sheep tongues and potted pigeons might have been usurped by eggs Benedict and Weetabix, but the need for early bird energy – whether chasing peasants for tithes or offspring on the school run – remains. If breakfast’s composition has changed, so too has its wider role in our lives. Until relatively recently, unless you were a moneyed member of the loafing class, the day’s first meal was partaken early and summarily, whether at home or in the local greasy spoon. Now, going out for breakfast is A Thing. We meet friends, and we update our lexicon and repast accordingly: think the introduction of ‘brunch’, or…
