When my sister and I were little our mum always kept an old cardigan of hers in the cubbyhole, under the stairs, which she laid over us whenever we were poorly. It was made of soft, mauve wool and had leather buttons that were worn but soft to the touch. The cardi was a comfort and a treat because it was Mum’s – it smelled of her and always made us feel better. As I grew older, I remember fetching the ‘poorly’ cardi for Mum when she didn’t feel well, laying it over her and tucking her in as she had done for me.
