CRUNCH AND COLOUR Those with a grower’s mind consider the beginning of the year as a time of hibernation rather than renewal. For gardeners, it’s a time to stay indoors with seed catalogues and re-runs of Gardeners’ World (oh don’t fib, you’ve watched them too) until life begins again in early spring – Mother Nature’s new year. Only then will the regeneration we incongruously associate with the beginning of the year really begin: seeds will germinate, bulbs will shoot, things will be reborn and the new growing year will truly start. Until then, the days are short, the mizzle is relentless and, frankly, the last thing I want to do is get out in the veg patch. I might tidy up some spent brassicas – which sadly is most of them…
