Moira opens the car door for Rebecca, a laughing bundle of layers and bags. The two women drive away from the city, tarmac glittering under the streetlights. Moira is cautious on the dark winding road to the hills: deserted, but so icy. The night is calm and cloudless, blurry half-moon, only the sound of the blow-heater and tyres hissing on the road. Rebecca checks herself in the mirror, and plucks at a stray grey hair. “I'm not ready to be old yet.” Moira glances sideways at her friend. “Just put your hat on. You're fine.” A pause. “Do you know we've only 7 hours, 49 minutes and 41 seconds of daylight today?” Rebecca laughs. “How do you even remember that?!” But Rebecca knows that's just Moira.
