MILK THISTLE A hangover helper, milk thistle is native to Asia and southern Europe, but is now widespread. This tall herb can grow to 2m or more, producing large purple flower heads with spiky leaves. According to legend, the white of the leaf veins comes from a drop of the Virgin Mary's milk. It was traditionally used as a herb that stimulates milk production, hence the common name ‘milk thistle’. By the Middle Ages, milk thistle was known for its treatment of liver illnesses and help with the elimination of toxins. It contains silymarin, a chemical effective for treating liver disorders, including damage caused by the excessive consumption of alcohol. The herb is also a powerful antioxidant.
