Fancy dress is definitely Marmite. For every one of us (me) that loves being surrounded by fake fur, feathers, assorted costume jewellery, some brightly coloured tights and a half-baked idea at 2pm on the day of the party, there's someone else for whom the words ‘Come in fancy dress’, make their heart sink. Whether it's a Christmas do, murder mystery, Halloween or birthday party, it's a chance to assume a new persona, not to mention to have fun creating something from stuff you have around. Growing up, my sister and I were dance school kids. My mum – who, along with my nan, made all of our costumes – kept the lot, from mini-Beefeaters to bugs and fairy princesses.
