It became so popular that eventually, hundreds of thousands of turkeys were being walked to the markets of London from farms in Norfolk every year. These turkey drives took several weeks, and some birds had their feet dipped in tar to help them endure the long walk, while others, rather more stylishly, wore tiny leather boots.
