OUTING FROSTY MORNINGS Early mornings can be bracing, but when the skies are clear of clouds, you may get the chance to go walking in a winter wonderland. It may not snow often, but frost can create a white Christmas, too. Frost occurs when water vapour from the air condenses onto surfaces and then freezes. The air temperature must be between 0°C and 4°C. More impressive is hoar frost – spiky, icicle-like frost fingers that form when surfaces are already below freezing, so water vapour condenses and freezes instantly. Frost is more likely to be found in valleys, where cool air sinks, so take a walk along rivers and streams to be in with a chance of seeing it.
