New Year's Eve 2002. The midnight gongs have been and gone and it's time to leave. Where's my shoe? I think. I took them off earlier as they were pinching and now I can only find one of them – and, unlike Cinderella, I'm not leaving without the other. I'm hysterical now and people are looking. “It's only a shoe,” I hear someone say, and I scowl at them as I continue to search. We're supposed to be on the minibus and people are getting impatient, but I don't care. I keep on looking and engage others in the hunt until at last it's found, nestled in the large vase of flowers in the foyer. Someone put it in there as a joke. Some joke, huh? I finally breathe, relief…
