THINGS TO NOTE AND NOTICE Local lore ST THOMAS'S ONION, DERBYSHIRE For the last three centuries, young women without a date for the Christmas disco could rely upon St Thomas and an onion. Maids (aka all the single ladies) would go to bed on 21 December with an onion under their pillow to entice a lover. While the stench may not sound that enticing, along with a prayer to St Thomas, it's apparently brought love to many and continues to do so. The prayer and customs vary from area to area – in Victorian Derbyshire the onion was pierced with nine pins. We'd prefer a box of Milk Tray personally, but each to her own.
