Brought up on a diet of eighties films, my sister Maxine was a huge fan of American culture and a trip to NYC was her holy grail. In 2003, she made it there and lived the tourist dream, shaking sparkly pom-poms on New Year's Eve in Times Square. Looking back at the photos, I see how her lips were blue as her body fought the icy wind of the New York winter. Maxine was born with a heart condition and felt the cold more keenly than most. She brought me back a snow globe with a teeny New York City inside – and who can fail to be enchanted by a snow globe? The ideal piece of tourist tat to show that my little sister had thought of me.
