PRESENT TENSE English is very generous with presents – it has four present tenses: present simple, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous. While it’s used to talk about what’s happening now, the tense is also used to describe habitual events (“I go trainspotting every weekend”) and things in the future (“the sales start on Monday”). But which present tense is which? The present simple is for those things that won’t change: “I cook”. Present continuous is for things that, perhaps sadly, will end: “I am cooking.” The present perfect uses the present tense of the verb “have”, with a past participle: “I’ve cooked for hours”.
