WHAT IS IT? A winter-flowering clematis with pretty pendant blooms. They are reasonably hardy, surviving temperatures down to -12, and require a sunny site that is sheltered from strong winds – against a south-facing wall is ideal. Plant at least two feet away from the base of a wall and water regularly after planting in the first growing season. WHY WOULD YOU? Chris from Taylors Clematis (taylorsclematis.co.uk) says they are glorious because “they give evergreen foliage throughout the year as well as beautiful flowers in white cream or pinky red all through winter, when there is nothing else much in flower in the garden”. They don’t need pruning, but if you did need to paint your fence, cut them back after flowering. They’re happy in the ground or in large pots. WHY…
