This summer, I tasted my first almond picked straight from the tree. It was delicious, with a crunchy, creamy texture and a flavour a million miles from the dry, almost bitter nuts dutifully cracked and nibbled over the festive season. Granted, I was in the glorious Andalusian mountains and it was one of at least 50 or so trees in a grove that snaked down the hillside. While I know that the balmy climate and holiday state of mind played their part in this nutty-licious encounter, I resolved that as soon as I got home, I would plant an almond tree.
