WINTER CAN BE A CHALLENGING TIME FOR WILDLIFE, BUT YOUR GARDEN CAN OFFER WELCOME FOOD AND SHELTER

Winter-flowering shrubs or climbers, or those that produce berries, are a great source of food and shelter for birds, small mammals and insects. Here are two of our favourites: Clematis tangutica A pretty climber with beautifully scented golden flowers, followed by hairy seed-heads. These are popular food for birds and small mammals. Ivy A very useful climbing plant with beautifully sculpted leaves that provide year-round cover for wildlife. If sited with space between the plant and a wall, ivy cover is perfect for nesting birds. Flowers produced in the autumn are appreciated by insects such as hoverflies, tortoiseshell butterflies and bees. Leaves provide food for caterpillars of the swallow-tailed moth, and in late winter, berries are a food source for small mammals and birds such as hedge sparrows, robins and thrushes. This…
