Abel Heywood Northern Quarter, Manchester Tucked down a side street in one of Manchester’s hipper districts is the Abel Heywood, named for a poor man who became a success and launched the Poor Man’s Guardian, a working man’s newspaper sold for a penny. There’s a proper pub at street level, a classy restaurant on the floor above, then 15 surprisingly quiet and chic rooms up top. The exposed brick wallpaper and cityscape murals are a reminder that you can walk from here to pretty much anywhere in central Manchester. A hotel newspaper with reviews of venues, shops, restaurants, museums and parks, along with a map, are a nice touch. The chef knows what he’s about – harissa chicken, beef and oxtail pie plus sharing boards and small plates are all available in the pub…
