For seven years, the open road has been home for Daan and Maaike, their three daughters, Fenna, Alba and Isolde, plus Nan the dog, as they travel around Europe in a self-built house on wheels. They try to live as simply and sustainably as possible and, with their way of life, hope to inspire others to do the same. Daan and Maaike, both photographers and artists, haven’t had a fixed abode since 2005. “We started on a historic tjalk (a Dutch barge) with which we travelled through the Netherlands,” explains Maaike. “We lived wherever the ship took us.
