A sunny evening, walking over the River Thames between the South Bank and Embankment tube station. Trains rattle past, buskers play. But below me, a flash of a sleek head, disappearing below the water. It can’t really be… no, surely not? But other passers-by have seen the seal, too – it’s caused a bit of a stir, the views of St Pauls and the City forgotten in favour of this remarkable wild animal. There is a real thrill in seeing marine mammals – that’s seals, dolphins and whales – in the wild. And it turns out that seals in the capital aren’t actually that uncommon. The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) runs a project counting sightings of marine mammals in the lower reaches of the Thames and in the city. Canary…
