THE AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY CAN FEEL LIKE A PAUSE BEFORE ACTIVITY BEGINS AGAIN, PERHAPS A DISTANT ECHO OF HARVEST RHYTHMS SUGGESTS AMY BARNARD

As a kid, I had mixed feelings about the August bank holiday. It was exciting, there were always lots of people that weekend – family and friends and piles of food. It was also a transition, the beginning of the end of the summer holidays, signalling the coming return to schoolwork. Depending on the weather, the barbecue might be enjoying its last hurrah, before being trundled back into the garage to sit out the coming winter. I could feel the focus of the season shifting, even as a child. Though seemingly far removed from our family’s annual bank holiday barbecue, this break was rooted in the old harvest rhythm, when schools took a break so that children could go into the fields to help their families and community.
