A POETIC PAUSE

Two men walking Ian Humphreys Dandelion clocks glimmer above us, a hundred white lights strung from the trees. You reach up to cup one – it flickers and fades in your palm and the August breeze corkscrews it away. By a field of rooks, catkins fur a rabbit’s pecked-clean bones. The footpath falters at a shallow brook so you smooth out the map on a gate stone. At noon, a flock of geese arrows the way ahead as we wade through purple heather. There are twenty-two of them, you say. One for each year we’ve been together. When I pass you the water flask, the hum of a pylon lifts each hair on my arm.…
