PHOTOSYNTHESIS Photosynthesis is the most important process in the ecosystem, providing the source of all chemical energy in the food chain. Through photosynthesis, plants convert the energy from sunlight into chemical energy. Green plants absorb light energy through the chlorophyll in their leaves. The energy is needed to react carbon dioxide (absorbed by the plant through its leaves) and water (taken in through its roots) to produce chemical energy, stored in the form of sugars, and oxygen. A portion of the energy is passed onto whatever eats the plant, and then a slightly smaller portion again to the thing that eats that thing, and so on, until it reaches us humans.
