There’s something romantic about a walled garden. First, there are the walls themselves, inviting you to guess what lies within. Will it be a tangle of brambles or a vision of loveliness, where the walls are clad in a froth of apple blossom, and where roses clamber over arches amid the climbing beans and sweetpeas? Either way, the atmosphere inside a walled garden is very different to that outside. The walls buffer the wind, meaning the air is stiller and warmer. The bricks act as heat reservoirs, raising the temperature still more and intensifying the scent of the flowers. Sound – birdsong or the buzz of bees – travels further. They are, in short, idyllic.
