Chow Mezger and his family make Jude’s Ice Cream, out of a barn in Hampshire. He says it’s all about great flavours and supporting the community

Make the best. That’s been our philosophy from the start – although the business has changed a lot since those days. My dad, Theo, wanted to make something in what was an old dairy barn at our home, and he thought ice cream was – in his own words – the most “sexy option”. In the beginning, he just wanted to create brilliant ice cream, using the cream and milk from local farmers, although he took it very seriously and went off to Reading University to study. On 19 December 2002, he took his first tub to the local pub. It’s named Jude’s after my mum. Working as a family can be risky – but for us it’s worked out brilliantly.
