Your sunny meadow is all very well but on a hot summer’s day, there’s nothing more cooling than being beside water. Make for the woods and bag a brook, where you can relax in dappled sunlight and chill drinks in the stream. Unpack a picnic of a cloth-wrapped pie and a basket of simple salads. Meringue sandwiches with berries are a pudding that appeals, even when the mercury rises. Then snooze in the shade or roll up your trousers to dangle your toes in the deliciously cold water. With no need to lug a cool box, you can bring fishing nets to search for sticklebacks and amuse little people or play pooh sticks from the bank.
