There are eight ancient agricultural festivals that told our farming ancestors when it was time to sow, reap, stop and take stock. To mark the turning of the year, Lia is looking at her plot, eating food connected to each festival or season, and carrying out a small act of celebration. LAMMAS The pavements are hot, my shoulders are burnt, and I suddenly have courgettes by the bucket-load. This is Lammas, high summer, when swifts wheel in a deep blue sky. It is the moment we’ve all been waiting for, or at least I have. This always feels like the high point of my year, when my hard work on the plot begins to really pay off and the living is good.
