Gary Fildes was always fascinated by “the distant wonder of the universe”. Borrowing his brother’s telescope, he studied the night sky, looking at the stars and their constellations. He left school at 17 to work on a building site, keeping his passion a secret, until a mid-life crisis changed the direction of his life. He’s now the lead astronomer at the Kielder Observatory (which he founded) “where darkness reigns supreme, free from the scourge of light pollution”.
