Dahlias

Thank goodness we are all over that ‘dahlias are vulgar’ thing. Excellent gardeners, Christopher Lloyd and Sarah Raven recognised their exuberant beauty and persuaded us all to do likewise. It would be churlish not to: one single tuber produces hundreds of bright, ruffled cut flowers right through to autumn. The only drawback: dahlias are not frost-resistant and must be dug up and brought indoors during winter*, but this, surely, is a small price to pay for such warm-hearted abundance. * This is not too much of a chore: simply lift dahlia tubers and store in shallow wooden boxes packed with peat-free compost or dry sand.…
