“The British are notorious for underestimating the debilitating effect of heat exhaustion.” Those words aren’t taken from a 1940s Public Service Broadcast, but are some of the sage advice found on the British Caving website. Then there’s that cliché about the mad dog and the Englishman. All right, we get it – along with booze and unruly queues, the heat is something the Brits have a reputation for simply not being able to handle.
Of course, compared with foreign lands, properly hot days are such a rarity here that it’s tempting to try to maximise every over-heated minute. Not for us the indulgences of siestas, for example. After all, we’re drilled to make hay while the sun shines – even if that means getting sunstroke in the process.
