This is what your summer wardrobe needs: a garment that is knock-out glamorous but will also conceal anything you’d rather keep hidden. Simultaneously demure and sexy, the kaftan is that garment. It may have long sleeves and metres of enveloping cotton, but look at its side splits, plunging neckline and embroidered details: it effortlessly manages to be both hot and cool.
These days the kaftan is mostly consigned to the beach where it is pulled on over a bikini when an instant cover-up is called for. But this is a shame – a kaftan is an item of clothing with far greater possibilities than mere beachwear.
