• Foraging for wild seaside food. Marsh samphire grows in salt marshes and mud flats. Harvest with a sharp knife in summer at low tide; don’t pull up by the roots. Wash thoroughly and steam or boil for 8–10 minutes. Gather mussels longer than 3cm in length and wash well in at least two changes of fresh water. Discard any that don’t open after cooking – they aren’t edible. • Exploring sand dunes. Dunes are precious landscape features and wildlife habitats. Creep quietly through them looking for lizards, birds and butterflies, wildflowers and tough plants. • Playing homemade beach games. Draw a board on firm, dark sand and hunt for natural playing pieces such as shells, pebbles and seaweed. You could play noughts and crosses, Connect Four, draughts or even chess. If…
