JERUSALEM We all know of the 'dark satanic mills' and 'England's green and pleasant land' from the hymn Jerusalem. It's sung in schools and at sport matches, appears at the Proms, royal weddings and in films – Chariots of Fire's name is even taken from its words. The lyrics are based on an early 19th century poem by William Blake, actually called And Did Those Feet In Ancient Time. While Blake's intended meanings are hard to pin down, it draws on imagery from the biblical book of Revelation about Christ's second coming. According to Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum – currently hosting an exhibition about Blake – his 'search for spirituality' was a response to 'war, revolution and political turbulence'.
