Making a fairer media

Bilan is a team of five women journalists in Somalia, led by Acting Chief Editor Hinda Abdi Mohamoud. The team is celebrating the second anniversary of being the first, women-only, media team in the country, reporting on stories they consider important, bringing some balance and representation to Somalia's male-heavy news perspective. “Some stories were just not getting told in Somalia – like how people with HIV have to live in secret with no support, or how mums don't feel able to tell their daughters about periods before they happen,” says Hinda. “But with Bilan, these issues are getting covered and are creating a huge public debate.” A childhood dream and perseverance led Hinda to journalism and joining the Bilan team. “Bilan is changing how the news is told, not just which…
