Hope that an almost-extinct species can be saved from disappearing

Najin and Fatu (pictured) are the world's last Northern White Rhinos. While technically extinct, there's new hope from the Biorescue project, an international consortium of scientists, that the species could be saved. Researchers in Germany achieved the world's first IVF rhino pregnancy earlier this year with the closely related Southern White Rhino. Though the mother died of an infection before coming to term, analysis of the foetus showed it had had a 95% chance of being born healthy. The challenge now is to implant one of only 30 Northern White Rhino embryos, created with sperm collected before the last male rhino died and Fatu's eggs, into a surrogate mother.
