What links Marianne Faithfull, Alice Liddell, Zelda Fitzgerald and Yoko Ono? One answer is that, on a quick Google, they’re all linked to the description of ‘muse’ – their place in pop culture defined by their relationships with artists and musicians. But, if muses are easy to identify, they’re harder to define. We know what they do. Sophie Haydock – whose novel The Flames tells the stories of the early 20th-century Expressionist painter Egon Schiele’s four muses – beautifully describes them as “the spark that lights the match of creativity. They ignite the urge to create, and are often integral to something magical – art, music, literature – being borne into the world.” But how does this creative magic happen?
