Small Things By Frank Ormsby When I remarked to the two old boys in the parkthat I had not glimpsed the heron lately,they were beside themselves with disappointment:‘You missed him by five minutes. He flew across to the island.’They cast about for fitting consolation.‘Have you seen the egrets?’ I had not. ‘There’s two of themlives in the Milewater Stream. Keep an eye out for them.’That’s three pleasures: the old boysin their baseball caps delighting in small things,the small things made precious by their delight,to everyone who will listen, which today,in this stretch of the park, is everyone.
