Post your best efforts at facebook.com/thesimplethingsmag HOW TO… DATE A HEDGEROW Calculate the age of any hedge with Hooper’s Hedgerow Hypothesis Back in the 1970s, ecologist (and alliteration fan) Dr Max Hooper suggested his ‘Hooper’s hedge hypothesis’, a rule of thumb that helps estimate the age of a hedge. It’s a simple idea that’s stood the test of time. Measure 30 metres of the hedge and count the number of trees and shrubs in them. Avoid starting at the edge of the hedge and only count species that are well established (an ID guide may be useful). Repeat on a couple more 30-metre samples and then take the average. Generally…
