BRAZIL has a large rail network of around 30,000km with two main track gauges in use; metre gauge and 1600mm (5ft 3in) broad gauge. Apart from the electrified network in the Sao Paulo area, part of which is worked by Stadler built rack fitted locos, most of the lines are not electrified, and as a result a wide variety of diesel locos are in use. The majority of the locomotives hail from North American manufacturers, although many were built in Brazil where Wabtec (formerly GE) has a major locomotive factory. Railways in Brazil were privatised in the 1990s with former state railway Rede Ferroviária Federal SA (RFFSA) split up with six large mostly geographic concessions awarded.
