SELF-PROPELLED or autonomous wagons are fairly unusual, with only 14 currently in use. Balfour Beatty has two YJA-F power wagons (Nos. DR 78701/702, dating from 2004) for use with Harsco Track Technologies’New Track Construction (NTC) machines. An earlier version of NTCs, operated by GART Renewals, used a tracked bulldozer for on-site haulage. Network Rail owns Cowans Boyd YXA-P power wagons Nos. DR 89005/007/008. Introduced in 1985 by British Rail, there were originally 16 long-welded rail trains (LWRT) with the power wagons providing traction and braking during rail drops to the trackbed. Most of these sets were replaced by locomotive-powered Rail DeliveryTrains (RDT), though three were refurbished in 2006-07. Known as LWRT 01-03, they were lengthened by one YEA‘Perch’ intermediate flat to allow the carriage of 216 metre-long ‘strings’of rail. Network…
