Key point for saddle tank overhaul at Moor Road

New front frame stretcher fabricated for Slough Estates No. 3 at Middleton Railway.

THE overhaul of Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST Slough Estates No. 3 (1544/1924) at the Middleton Railway (MR) reached an important milestone on Wednesday, June 12, with the arrival of a new front frame stretcher. The original frame stretcher was found to be badly cracked and known to be beyond repair when the locomotive was dismantled for overhaul in 2022. The new one has been fabricated by Northern Steam Services of Stockton, the same firm which is now the custodian of No. 60103 Flying Scotsman for the National Railway Museum. The railway is looking towards preserving the front of the old frame stretcher, which has the name of the manufacturer cast in it.
