Salop’s Standard brake van restored

Van saved for preservation has been renovated by Cambrian Heritage Railways.

A BR Standard brake van that was visible from trains heading from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and Cardiff for many years, has been returned to its former glory at Cambrian Heritage Railways (CHR). BR Standard 20 ton brake van No. B 955055 was stabled for several years at Coleham yard, Shrewsbury – now the depot for Network Rail’s ERTMS-fitted Class 37s, designated Class 97/3s. It is understood that the van derailed while it was operating with a ballast cleaner, so it was taken off train. It appears that a replacement buffer was fitted by a mobile fitter, but the van was never collected from Coleham yard. The van was secured for preservation at Oswestry in around 2007.
